Photograph of a Plane wreckage from RAF Annan, Langholm

Description

This image shows a plane crash by an allied fighter pilot who had trained at RAF Annan. The airbase was renowned for its high number of crashes and casualties due to weather and mechanical issues. Several foreign pilots lost their lives while training here and many were buried in Annan Cemetery in a marked Commonwealth War Graves.

It is unclear which type of aircraft is pictured here, but the most common planes to fly from RAF Annan were Hawker Hurricane and Hawker Typhoons. Shrapnel from such wreckages would have been strewed out into the landscape of Dumfries and Galloway to be picked up by onlookers or left to sink into the ground.
