Hudson Bomber Tail Fin
- Description
This part of a Hudson Bomber wreckage was found less than a mile away from the Devil’s Porridge Museum. It was discovered in a woodland by history enthusiasts and donated to the museum.
Nothing concrete is known about this particular plane or why it crashed, but local legend tells that it hit a storehouse of the Eastriggs ammunition storage depot before hitting the ground. The rest of the plane is missing, either buried in the ground or was destroyed in the crash. The crew most likely perished.
Large pieces of shrapnel like this would have brought home to deadly nature of the war to local communities. They remind us how directly the War affected Scotland and how, never mind how temporary, the landscape was changed by the influence of war.
