New Lanark is a former 18th century cotton spinning mill located on the banks of the Falls of Clyde where philanthropist and utopian idealist Robert Owen moulded a model industrial community in the early 19th century. The imposing cotton mill buildings, spacious and well designed worker's housing and dignified educational institute and school still testify to Owen's humanism. Today New Lanark is recognised as one of Scotlands's six UNESCO World Heritage Sites of "outstanding universal value" and welcomes over 300,000 visitors to the site each year.
