- Description
Cased shipmaker’s model of the SS Uganda/Livingstonia, built by Alexander Stephen & Sons Ltd in 1905. The vessels were built for Glasgow based shipping company Maclay and McIntyre for their cargo fleet.
The model is a half-hull design mounted next to a mirrored back plate, giving the illusion that the model is complete. The ship model was presented to the Maclay and McIntyre’s by Stephen’s following the completion and launch of the ships.
Whilst travelling from Alexandria to London in 1918 the SS Uganda was attacked by the German U-boat U-28. Unable to survive the sudden attack Uganda sank after being hit with a torpedo. The SS Livingstonia emerged unscathed from the war and continued to carry cargo until she was scrapped in 1934.
