A locomotive headlamp which was used by the London and North Eastern Railway Company between 1923 and 1947. In the Steam and early Diesel era, where these lamps were placed told the signal men what kind of a train it was, for example if it was an ordinary passenger train or carrying livestock. It also indicated the train’s likely running speed as well as its line priority.
