This pastel from 1920 shows a scene inside one of Coatbridge's last malleable ironworks. By this time most of these works had been put out of business by competition from the steel industry but the Waverley survived as part of a conglomerate, the Scottish Iron and Steel Company.

Here you can see a shingling hammer at work, literally bashing the impurities out of the ball of molten iron that has just been removed from a furnace. Next, the flattened iron will be transferred to a rolling mill, whose flywheel you can see on the right.
