This painting of Gartsherrie Ironworks in Coatbridge illustrates the furnaces lighting up the night sky. By the 1840s Gartsherrie was the biggest ironworks in the world with 16 blast furnaces in operation. The town of Coatbridge was known as the 'Iron Burgh'.
