- Description
Embroidered sewing kit, containing three packets of needles and some cotton wool. This sewing kit was found inside the marriage kist of Mary MacCallum and can be dated to 1859. It was then handed down through the McCallum family, being stored for many years within the family house ACHDN.A, before being donated to Auchindrain in 2012.
A Marriage Kist is a blanket box or trunk given to a girl of marriageable age by her family in anticipation of a wedding in due course, and which she then used to accumulate and store items that would be of use in her new home and role when the time came: items such as sewing equipment, best linen and good clothes.
