- Description
In the 19th century, this house was home to a woman known as Bell a’Phuill, or ‘Bell of the Muddy Place’. This was because her home lay beside the place where cattle would cross the Allt a'Mhuilinn burn, trampling the ground and leaving muddy, churned earth in their wake.
Bell’s full name was Isabella McCallum, and she was the township’s 'wise woman' or healer. This was an important role in a time and place when doctors and medicine were expensive and difficult to access.
